The History of Volleyball
Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a physical education instructor at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Originally called “Mintonette,” the game combined elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball. The idea was to create an indoor activity suitable for all ages and skill levels.
The term “volleyball” emerged during a demonstration match when a spectator observed how the players volleyed the ball back and forth over the net. Official rules were first established in 1897, and the sport quickly gained popularity in YMCA centers and other organizations.
In 1947, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) was founded to oversee international competitions. Volleyball made its Olympic debut at the 1964 Tokyo Summer Games, marking a major milestone in its global development.

Rules of Volleyball
Volleyball is governed by standardized rules set by the FIVB. Here are the key regulations:
- Team Composition:
Each team consists of six players on the court, with additional substitutes available. - Scoring System:
Matches are typically played as best-of-five sets. Teams must score 25 points to win a set (with a two-point lead). A deciding fifth set is played to 15 points. - Rotations:
Teams rotate positions after winning the serve from their opponents. Correct positioning is mandatory. - Hits:
A team can hit the ball a maximum of three times before returning it over the net. The same player cannot hit twice consecutively, except for a block. - Serve:
The serve is made from behind the end line. If the ball touches the net but lands in the correct service court, it remains in play. - Block:
Blocks do not count as hits, and front-row players can attempt to block opposing spikes. - Faults:
Faults include net contact, out-of-position errors, or the ball landing out of bounds. Points are awarded to the opposing team. - Libero:
The Libero is a defensive specialist who cannot attack above net height. Wearing a different colored jersey, the Libero can replace any back-row player at any time without prior notice.
