Origins of Athletics
Athletics, commonly known as track and field, has a history that traces back to ancient civilizations. The earliest documented competitions were in ancient Greece, especially the Olympic Games, which began in 776 BC in Olympia. These early contests included running, jumping, and throwing events.
Decline and Revival
After the collapse of the Roman Empire, interest in athletics diminished. However, during the late 19th century, the sport was revived with the introduction of the modern Olympic Games, initiated by Pierre de Coubertin in 1896. This revival led to standardized rules, organized competitions, and the formation of governing bodies dedicated to athletics.
Formation of Global Governance
In 1912, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)—now known as World Athletics—was established to oversee the sport on a global scale.
